The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is a small sedan that comes in three main trim levels: LS, LT and LTZ. An Eco version of the LS will also be available.

The LS is built with a 1.8L inline-4 engine that produces  . The LS includes 16-inch steel wheels, OnStar, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, air-conditioning, an eight-way (manual) adjustable driver seat, a 60/40-split rear seat, a trip computer, full power accessories and a six-speaker stereo with a CD/MP3 player, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio jack. The 1LT comes with a turbocharged engine, chrome wheel covers, color-keyed power sideview mirrors, floor mats and a one-touch-up driver’s window. The 2LT adds alloy wheels, remote vehicle start, cruise control, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a six-way power driver seat, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, a USB/iPod port for the audio system and Bluetooth.

The Cruze LTZ also offers a turbocharged 1.4L inline-4 engine. The LTZ adds 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, illuminated vanity mirrors, rear park assist, a sport-tuned suspension and four-wheel disc brakes.

Many of the upper trims’ standard features can be had on lower trims via à la carte options or packages. A navigation system, a sunroof and an RS appearance package (unique front/rear fascias, foglights, rear spoiler) are all available on the upper trims.

Safety

All 2011 Chevrolet Cruze models have a notable 10 airbags. The Cruze comes with stability control, antilock brakes, full-length side curtain airbags, front knee airbags and front and rear side impact airbags as standard. All trims save the LTZ have a front-disc/rear-drum brake setup; the LTZ upgrades to four-wheel disc brakes.

General Motors announced that GMC Terrain sales are continuing at a rapid pace as it enters its second model year. GM said that in the first seven months of 2010, the Terrain has consistently taken a speedy 13 days to turn on dealer lots. The rest of the compact SUV segment usually takes 28 days and  51 days for all vehicles.

“We’ve had an outstanding response to the Terrain since it launched last Fall,” said Lisa Hutchinson, GMC Product Marketing Director. “The Terrain is attracting new buyers to the brand who are looking for an SUV that offers fuel economy, exterior and interior styling, quality and safety that maintain GMC’s reputation for engineering excellence.”

GM also said that the Terrain appeals to women more than any other GMC product, which is pretty obvious since GMC is not really known for making female oriented vehicles. Approximately 46 percent of buyers of the Terrain are women, which is more than 20 percentage points higher than the overall brand.

When the Corvette ZR1 was first introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the 2009 model’s power was estimated at 100 horsepower for each of its 6.2 liters of displacement. GM Powertrain has completed SAE certification of the 2010 ZR1’s supercharged LS9 V-8 and the results exceed the estimate: 638 horsepower (476 kW) and 604 lb.-ft. of torque (819 Nm).

The LS9’s output is nearly 103 horses per liter, or just about 1.7 horses for each of the engine’s 376 cubic inches. It is unquestionably the most powerful automotive production engine ever manufactured by General Motors and enables the Corvette ZR1 to achieve a top speed of more than 200 mph.

The capability of the new Corvette ZR1 comes from more than just its 6.2L 638-hp LS9 supercharged V8 engine.  Equally significant is a power-to-weigh ratio of 5.2 pounds per horsepower, thanks to an aluminum-frame, magnesium fixed-roof structure, visible carbon-fiber body components and carbon ceramic breaks.

The LS9 engine is hand-built by specially trained technicians at GM’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich. It is a unique, small-volume engine production facility that also builds the Chevrolet Corvette Z06’s LS7 engine and other high-performance GM production engines.

Toyota has introduced a substantially revamped version of its Sienna van for the 2011 model year, and the news on that front is mostly good. The latest Sienna is considerably better than the preceding model in nearly every way, and its improved ride and handling are particularly notable.

Discerning Dallas Toyota consumers know minivans are all about spacious interiors, accommodating seats and flexible cargo space. The 2011 Sienna from the leading Toyota dealership in Dallas has available seating for eight passengers and ample storage space. In either version, the second-row seats can move forward or backward as much as 23 inches, providing a lot of space flexibility for the second and third rows. Sliding the second row forward also makes it much easier to climb into the third row. That seat can accommodate three small people or two adults.

For carrying more gear, the third row folds fairly easily into a well. But even when the third-row seats are being used, the cargo space is 39 cubic feet — about two and a half times as much as the trunk of a Camry sedan.

Toyota calls the 2011 model the third-generation Sienna, although there are many similarities with the previous one. The V-6 engine is carried over and the van is built on “roughly” the same underlying architecture, said David Lee, a product communications specialist.

The new exterior styling came from Toyota’s California design studio. A 6-speed transmission replaces a 5-speed unit. The steering system, formerly hydraulic, is now electric.

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze will replace Cobalt as the compact car from General Motors’ volume division. Cruze is a 4-door sedan that comes in LS, LT, LTZ, and fuel-economy-oriented Eco trim levels. The Cruze achieved 96 percent in adult occupant protection, making it the runner-up this year in the category and beating all tested premium brands, GM officials said.

Chevy has also provided a comparison showing that the Cruze has nine standard features that cost extra on the Honda Civic, including satellite radio, traction control and Air Conditioning. GRAPEVINE – After buying 22 cars and trucks from Classic Chevrolet, Ray Henry knows exactly how he’ll be greeted when he walks into the dealership here.

But maybe more important, he says, is that anyone he refers to Classic will get the same cheery, small-town treatment at the sprawling mega-retailer.

“I can send my mother, my neighbor, my best friend or my wife to them and know they will all get the same deal I do,” said Henry, 58, a retired Irving fireman who owns RLC Enterprises of Corinth and Lewisville Sports Center, and buys vehicles for his businesses and family.

Last year, Classic Chevrolet reaffirmed its status as a heavyweight at General Motors Co. by becoming the top-selling Chevy dealership in the nation for the fourth straight year. The self-styled “country store” is working on No. 5.

“We’re off to a good start,” said dealership owner Tom Durant, who prefers boots and jeans to suits and opened the dealership 20 years ago just south of State Highway 114.

Classic managed to sell 4,101 new vehicles in 2009, shrugging off a terrible economy, GM’s devastating bankruptcy and the most challenging year for the auto industry in decades.

While overall new-vehicle sales plummeted 30 percent locally, Classic’s fell 10 percent.

“It was a huge accomplishment,” said David Nottoli, regional sales and marketing manager for Chevrolet. “It’s such a credit to them that they were able to stay focused.”

The years ahead could be almost as challenging. At a time when a smaller and chastened GM is striving to stay skinny and keep inventories tight, Classic is operating on a “big-is-better” approach to the business – and succeeding.

Big inventory

Although there were only six vehicles in Classic’s spotless midsize showroom on a recent afternoon, the 20 acres of land around it were blanketed in trucks and cars – row after row of Silverado pickups, Tahoe SUVs, Suburbans, Avalanches and smaller numbers of cars such as Malibu sedans and Aveo compacts.

Most big Chevy dealers maintain inventories of 300 or 400 vehicles. Classic typically keeps 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles – most parked beneath individual tent tops that protect them from the sun and weather.

Moreover, while consumers nationally are turning away from trucks, Classic still relies on big pickups, full-size SUVs and crossovers for three-fourths of its sales.

In fact, that dependence on trucks is tied closely to the huge inventories.

Pickup trucks can be ordered in myriad body styles, chassis configurations, and engine and transmission combinations. Durant believes his chances for a sale increase when he has the vehicle in stock that someone is considering.

“Our theory is if someone comes on the lot, they’re here to buy,” said Ken Thompson, head of the Thompson Group, a specialized sales unit at Classic that focuses on fleet and commercial vehicles and accounted for about 25 percent of Classic’s sales last year.

Thompson’s unit, which maintains an inventory of its own of 300 vehicles, was Chevrolet’s top seller of commercial vehicles last year – and has been No. 1 in the nation for years.

‘There, you knew everybody’

Despite the scale of operations, Classic tries to maintain a country culture at its family-owned stores in Arlington, Carrollton, Granbury and Sugar Land, Dallas Texas, and Plant City, Fla.

The Granbury store was the family’s first Chevy dealership, opened by Tom Durant’s father in 1960.

“There, you knew everybody,” said Hagen Durant, 29, general manager of Classic and Tom Durant’s son. “It was laid-back, good-natured. You didn’t want to make someone mad you’d probably be seeing again.”

Unlike at many dealerships, the salespeople at Classic – some of whom have been there for 20 years – are empowered to accept deals and close sales. Customers don’t wait while a salesman runs to a manager for approval of an offer, easing some of the tension and speeding the sales process.

“Right up front, they provide more in the way of customer service,” said Alice Mason, 55, of Euless, a retired GM employee who says she has dealt with many dealerships over the years. Mason bought a new Malibu from Classic last year. “It’s just a more pleasant place.”

As a volume dealership, Classic essentially puts the priority on sales over profit. Consequently, Hagen Durant acknowledged, the new-car department isn’t always profitable, which isn’t unusual at any dealership.

But new-car sales drive all the other revenue-generating centers at the dealership – bringing cars and trucks in for service or body work, creating parts sales, providing trade-ins for the used-car department and sometimes new business for the finance department.

The high sales volumes also make Classic eligible for dealer incentives from Chevrolet, everything from cash payments to lower interest rates on the loans that the dealership takes to buy its inventory.

“We have a beautiful balance sheet,” Hagen Durant said. “There was not a single month last year when we didn’t show an overall profit.”

On Silverado’s shoulders

GM executives in Detroit know Classic well, often stopping by to visit when they’re in the Dallas Texas area.

But as a restructured GM struggles to diversify its lineup, increase car sales and run leaner – under pressure from its majority owner, the U.S. government – Classic is a compelling reminder of the power of big volumes and big trucks.

“There’s no question about it: As Silverado goes, so goes this region – and that’s one of Classic’s strengths,” said Nottoli, Chevy’s regional sales manager. “If I have a 20,000 sales goal one month, 7,000 or 8,000 of that will be Silverados.”

And those goals are important to GM. The south central region is frequently the automaker’s top sales region.

For his part, Tom Durant believes he can co-exist fine with the new GM.

“I think they will pull us back some,” he said. “But we can manage inventory better than anyone else. It’s all about winning, and we know what that takes.”

The news continues to get worse for this troubled car maker. The question to be seen is if these mounting problems will hurt the brand long term.

According to a survey of car dealers, many dealers feel that Toyota will bounce back from their recall woes. Many said that they would not count Toyota out and that the brand loyalty among Toyota owners was very strong.

An excerpt from the Yahoo News story also added this interesting twist:

Despite pressure from some lawmakers, President Akio Toyoda said he won’t be attending the U.S. congressional hearing on the automaker’s quality lapses, entrusting the job to U.S.-based executives, though would consider an appearance if the committee requests it. He said he wanted to focus on improving quality worldwide.

“I trust that our officials in the U.S. will amply answer the questions,” Toyoda said Wednesday in his third news conference in two weeks. “We are sending the best people to the hearing, and I hope to back up the efforts from headquarters.”

He said Yoshi Inaba, who heads Toyota Motor Corp.’s North American unit, was more familiar with the U.S. situation and was the best executive to deal with the hearing. Toyoda said he was still making plans to go to the U.S. and dates have yet to be set.

After a very close competition, Classic Chevy outperformed its closest competitor, Paddock Chevy of NY, by a margin of 368 vehicles. 

In October, Classic Chevrolet was actually trailing Paddock Chevrolet by 86 units. By November, the gap narrowed to 11 units, until Classic Chevy overtook the lead in December to outperform the NY dealer.      

The friendly competition between the two dealers was fueled by Paddock’s promotional advertising which made references to ‘beating the guy in Dallas Texas’ and showed two football helmets, one for Paddock and one for Classic (with a Dallas Texas Cowboys star on it) head to head with the numbers for each ‘team’ written on top.   The final score showed Classic in the lead by 368, a margin that Paddock just couldn’t close.

According to Hagen Durant, General Manager of Classic Chevy, “Historically, Classic Chevrolet has always outperformed against Paddock Chevrolet in the last quarter of every year that we have competed.  Even though we began November with an 11 unit deficit, there was no doubt in my mind that we would be able to close the gap and take the lead in December.”

Durant was correct in his prediction, and his Dallas Texas Chevy dealer now has the distinct honor of being the #1 Chevy dealership in the world, for the fourth consecutive year.
